When it comes to clothes, I’m a creature of habit. I’ll find a pair of jeans I love, or a super-soft comfy tee, and I will wear it until it falls apart. I learned about what a capsule wardrobe is last year, and it has made getting dressed so much easier! Winter in Texas is a special thing. Last Friday, it snowed. This week, it will be in the 70s. That being said, my winter capsule wardrobe has to be prepared for anything. Today I’m talking about the winter additions to my capsule wardrobe!
If you’re wondering what the heck a capsule wardrobe is in the first place, here’s a quick recap:
A capsule wardrobe is a small collection of well-loved clothes that changes with the seasons.
You maintain a base wardrobe (undergarments, outerwear, lounge and workout clothes, etc.), but your capsule wardrobe of shoes, pants and tops changes a few times a year.
The idea is at any moment, you should be able to grab a top and a bottom from your capsule wardrobe and feel like a rock star. It will take you all of 30 seconds to decide what to wear. You know that each item in your closet fits you well and makes you feel good. If you’re interested in building your own capsule wardrobe, you can check out my tutorial here (and see my fall picks).
One of my goals for 2017 is to adopt a more simplified lifestyle. Have you ever noticed just how much STUFF we have? A capsule wardrobe capitalizes on this idea because it involves stripping down your wardrobe (no pun intended) to the things you really love and eliminating all the excess that just hangs in your closet and never gets worn.
Winter Additions to my Capsule Wardrobe: Tops
I’m not exaggerating when I say I have worn the same five shirts/sweaters all through winter. I can guarantee you I wear each shirt in the stack above at least once a week. Why? I feel good in them. I like them. They’re comfortable. They make me feel pretty (all important things, ok). By wearing them with a different cardigan, scarf, or accessory, I can easily change up the look and be ready to go in less than ten minutes.
Winter Additions to my Capsule Wardrobe: Outerwear
I love jackets. It could be the one clothing accessory I’m addicted to. Is that weird? It’s hard to justify buying more jackets and outerwear when I already know I wear the same 4 or 5 jackets time after time. I want this suede motorcycle jacket in the coffee bean color SO bad. A vest, jacket or cardigan is a simple way to instantly change a look and gives me some versatility when I’m wearing the same shirt once a week ???? Here are my winter go-to’s.
Winter Additions to my Capsule Wardrobe: Everything Else
I believe in investing in good denim since I wear them for years. That being said, I’m still wearing the same pants from my fall capsule wardrobe and haven’t changed a thing. I have a pair of skinnys and a pair of bootcut jeans, and between the two I’m set!
Keeping a wardrobe like this means I’m not going out each season and buying a whole new closet. I transition some things and maybe buy a new piece or two to freshen things up, and I’m good! Below are some shoes, accessories and cold-weather gear that are staples in my winter capsule wardrobe.
