Make your own chai tea latte concentrate at home from tea bags! Cheaper than store bought concentrate with no extra ingredients. Simply mix with milk and pour over ice or keep it warm for a homemade chai tea latte!
My cousin (basically sister) initially introduced me to chai tea lattes in high school and my life was forever changed.
Seriously, I made it my mission in college to find the best chai tea latte in College Station.
To this day, one sip of it takes me back to her kitchen in Austin. Whenever I go visit I always know the fridge will be stocked with milk and chai tea latte concentrate to make our own chai tea lattes each morning.
With Texas heat nearing the 100s, most mornings I’m having either homemade cold brew coffee or a chai tea latte. You can buy chai tea concentrate at the store or you can make your own from tea bags.
In a pinch I love Tazo’s chai tea latte concentrate, (it’s what they use at Starbucks!) but I also know that it packs 16g/sugar per 1/2 cup serving. Yikes. You can either make this chai tea latte concentrate sugar free or use any your sweetener of choice!
How To Make Chai Tea Latte Concentrate From Tea Bags
It’s so easy to make your own and you get the bonus of knowing exactly what goes into it. Here’s what you’ll need:
- 4 cups filtered water
- 12 chai tea bags (I use Stash Chai Spice tea and it turned out SO good!)
- Optional: 1/4 to 1/2 cup sugar*
Bring filtered water to a boil, add in tea bags and reduce to a simmer for 15 minutes.
Twelve tea bags can get a little hectic, so the easiest way to keep them all together is to tie them in a knot and use a wooden clothespin to pin the tea bags to the lip of the pot.
Once the tea has steeped for 15 minutes, pull out the tea bags (no need to squeeze!) and allow chai tea concentrate to cool before transferring it into a container for the fridge.
*Options for Sweetening Your Chai Tea Latte Concentrate
You’ll want to add a sweetener of choice to your chai tea latte to get that traditional coffee shop taste. Here are your two options:
- Stir sugar into tea after you remove the tea bags, when the concentrate is still hot.
- Add sugar to your individual latte as you make it, which allows you to add it more or less to taste.
How To Make A Homemade Chai Tea Latte
You’ve got your homemade chai tea latte concentrate, now it’s time to make your latte.
What I like about the Stash brand of chai tea bags is they have a good amount of the traditional “spice”. You can play around with the amount of concentrate to milk, but this is a good place to start:
- 4 oz (1/2 cup) chai tea concentrate
- 4 oz milk
- (optional) 1/2-1 tsp sweetener of choice
For a stronger chai tea flavor, simply go heavier on the concentrate.

How much tea if using loose leaf? Thanks!
alex
about how much concentrate does it make in the end
Dru
I wish I had thought of doing this sooner–it works really good! I make half of a batch because it is only for me, and use 5 tea bags. I have tried it with loose-leaf tea chai but didn’t like it as much. For sweetening, I think it works better to lightly sweeten after taking it off the stove. This leaves me with 3 or 4 cups of tea, depending on how much milk I use. Barista-style oat milk works great. Lastly, if you feel like having a hot chai, this rewarms super well!
