I’ll be honest with y’all- pre-made mixes make life so much easier. I’m not ashamed to admit that I buy the Ghiradelli brownie mix in bulk at Costco to keep on hand for emergency brownie making sessions. You add three ingredients- how easy is that? P.S. if you’ve never tried these brownies, they taste like a million bucks.
I’ve seen these quick bread and cookie mixes in a mason jar before and always thought they were so cute.
I secretly always wanted to receive one because HELLO, add the wet ingredients and you’re done💁. Just as easy a boxed mix. They also look pretty in the glass jar. And no southern woman can have enough mason jars.
When I started thinking up Christmas gifts for my friends, these cookie mixes in mason jars came to mind. Oatmeal cookies are one of the best things I make (If you haven’t made my Best Ever Oatmeal Cookies, you’re missing out!) so I knew I was using that as my recipe. The great thing about these is you can put in any kind of mix you want: cookies, brownies, and even scones!
When you make these, know that the quart size mason jars fit about 3.5 cups of ingredients. I wanted to put in white chocolate chips and dried cranberries, but there was no room for them 🙁.
One more reason you should make these pretty things: If you make 12 of them, your cost is LESS THAN $2 EACH! Plus the ribbon you tie on. This is assuming you have baking soda, salt, spices, and other items that are small amounts.
- 12 quart-sized mason jars: 10.92
- Bag of flour: 2.50
- Bag of sugar: 2.59
- Old fashioned oats: $3.99
TOTAL: $20.00 (about $1.67 each)
Picking Your Recipe
It’s easier to make these in bulk rather than one at a time, and it’s cheaper since you’re not buying ingredients for multiple mixes. Here are some great options!

Assembling Your Jars
Once you have all the dry ingredients out for your mix, it’s time to do the fun part! There’s really no rhyme or reason to the layering, but I tried to put the more dense ingredients towards the bottom because I didn’t want them to mix.
For example, for my oatmeal cookies I layered the ingredients in this order:
- Brown sugar
- White sugar
- Salt, baking soda and cinnamon
- Oatmeal
- Flour
REALLY IMPORTANT TIP. To save yourself the mess, use a paper plate as a funnel to get the ingredients in. It works perfectly, and you just throw it away when you’re done.
Finishing Touches
You’ll want to attach a card to the side of your jar that has a list of the wet ingredients that need to be added, and baking instructions for the mix. I also included how many cookies the mix makes.
Tie the jar up with a bow, and you’re done! Twine wrapped around several times looks cute, too. Happy cookie mix making!
